Golden Comet Hen with a Barred Rock Rooster

Nope, no pictures. Golden Comet is a marketing name. It really doesn’t tell a whole lot about the genetic background of the hen other than that she is a red sex link. That doesn’t even tell me if she is a cross between two regular breeds or if she is based on the commercial egg layers. As far as size, egg laying ability, confirmation, and all that, the offspring will be somewhere between the father and the mother. How close to one or the other, I don’t know.

As far as color of the offspring, they will pretty much be colored and patterned like the Barred Rock. The BR rooster will give a barred gene to all his offspring so they will all be barred. He will give an extended black to all his offspring. Extended black should dominate over anything else that might be in that hen, so they will be black barred, not red barred or blue barred.

That’s theory. In reality they will be black barred but it is possible some red color could leak through in some feathers, especially in the rooster. If there is any red leakage, it probably won’t be much. Just a few random feathers here and there.

There is a possible exception. It’s possible that hen could be split for dominant white. Suspect this if she has a white tail. If this is the case, about half the offspring will be black barred and half will be white. The white ones will still have the barring gene but the white will cover up the barring so you can’t see it.

You are likely to get a Barred Rockish, to coin a word, chick with lots of white leaking and the occasional red/gold leakage as well. IF, IF the BR rooster is pure bred, which isn't all that common with lots of auction, feedstore type stock.

Likely the rooster will pass a barred gene along. The barring will be messy.

Thanks for the info...
I do not intend on raising any chicks, we've got some red sex links and was to supposed have some BR hens but they all turned out to be roo's...and the one we have left is staying pretty busy with ladies.
Curiousity got the best of me...

I had 3br roo 1 bsl roo 15 goldens/ browns (hens approx. Half/half each) 4 bsl hens and 5 barred hens. (Before I lost all but 5 of my hens, don't ask already explained in another post on here. I incubated 2 batches of eggs and ended up with baby's from those mixes.) These are the baby's from those crosses. Make your own educated guesses.. This is just how mine turned out, yours may turn out different or may vary..

Same roo 4/1-2/2018 taken today. Tried showing a better view of side color and hackle/ tail feathers. I think this is the bsl cross. Not sure though.

Comparison.. Should be able to tell the difference between the white leghorn, pure black, the ee's, and my incubated barred and whites with spots.. Dob 4/1-2/2018

Dob 4/25/2018 just crosses no store bought in this batch..

Dob 4/25/2018. This is the lightest barred one of the batch of baby's that was incubated. The pic does not do it justice. It looks a light greyish silver color mainly.

...what kid of chicken with that make?
Pictures?

just to see what our chicks may look like I had a friend hatch out some eggs in her incubator. I gave her a couple of each: golden comet, jersey giant, olive egger, amberlink, and a bantam type. The rooster is barred rock. They hatched a couple days ago. As expected we got a lot of chicks that look like the barred rock. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see how the one that looks like a golden comet will grow out! We will be keeping it and another chick that I think MAY be the jersey giant cross. The other four I’m giving to my boss who wants to restart a flock for egg production. Will update with pictures as these two we keep grow!
