I got six golden comet day old pullets from a hatchery around March 22. They all look like Golden Comet pullets except about three weeks ago one of them started crowing. The crowing one has a larger comb and waddle than the others, but three others of the six also have fairly large combs and waddles. From the numerous pullets pics I looked at, the Golden Comet pullets do have a good size comb, so I know that doesn't mean they're cockerals. I haven't noticed any of the others crowing, though the four with with the combs do have bumps where spurs would be. I also know hens have bumps, so I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything. But the crowing--??? I just don't know.

I called the hatchery and they acted like I was nuts since Golden Comets are sex-linked by color. I looked at pics of many other breeds, and the only one's they look like are Golden Comet pullets.

None of them are laying yet. I'm expecting eggs to start at around 18-22 weeks and they're about 14 weeks now.

Any ideas about what kind of chicken I have or does anyone know of a hen crowing?

I have, actually. A friend of mine had a columbian wyandotte start crowing (or trying to, anyway) when the only rooster on the property was removed...she eventually stopped. But this seems kind of early for a pullet to do that...weird though!

:)My father told me that my 2nd cousin had a buff orpington hen that crowed. And a friend who raised game chickens before Oklahoma changed the law said he had a hen that crowed. But I never witnessed any of this!
