umm, I thought all sex-links are essentially F1 crosses. an F1 cross is the first generation of birds from a cross breeding with the intention of having a new breed or variety. Golden Comets are sex-links because of the cross that creates them and as I understand it they don't breed true for the same reason so F2s wouldn't look like golden comets or wouldn't be sex-link or something like that.
In genetics, F1 means the first generation...so I'm thinking in this case, that means they are the offspring of the original crossing of the two purebreds.
Does that make sense? (It does in my head, but it loses something getting to my fingers
Yes F1s are the offspring of the intial cross of two pure breeds.
So say you cross a RIR roo and a RIW hen. That is the inital cross and their offspring would be the first generation ( F1s) And with this particular cross, the F1s would be sexlinks or Golden Comets, which is what you have.
Quote:
a golden comet is actually the offspring of a NH red roo over silver factored white rock hens.
Well I was just using that as an example, but all these sexlinks go by so many names and are from different or the same crosses that it doesn't even matter, they should all just be called Red Sexlinks and be done with it.
It doesn't really have to be a NHR roo and if golden comets are the same as golden sexlinks, and are red/gold with WHITE tails, the the hen breed would have to be a breed with dom white(which gives the white tails) and with the silver genes, ( like RIWs) , white rocks generally don't have either of those traits. White rocks are usually recessive White, ( usually masking barring) and some have silver genes and some don't.
But you can ask what are the parental breeds for certain Brand names of sexlinks and get all kinds of answers. Some will tell you that White Leghorn hens can be used to produce sexlinks, but they can NOT. White Leghorns are Dominant White and do NOT have the silver genes, which would make their chicks all white with black spots, regardless of what color the roo is.
