Has anyone tried the Golden Layer Hybrid from JMF? I have heard it exists, and they are supposed to lay large quantities of extra large eggs but can't find anyone who has actually tried them yet. Thanks in advance guys and gals

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Are you talking about ducks?

If so then I did have a Golden Layer (300 come to think of it) from Metzer farms in Ca.

I sold her before she started laying, so can't speak to that. But we did like her personality a lot. Nothing quiet about them though. We thought our girl was the mob boss cause she always said "Whack, whack, whack. :p

I do like ducks, but no, JMF apparently has developed a line of quail specifically for those that are raising quail for eggs. They are an Italian / Manchurian cross or something along that line. I don't see them listed on the website but know they exist(ed) as others on this website we're the ones that told me they were hatching them. Just never heard how they did after that.

I don't know the origins of my quail as I just bought them off Craigslist, but they were laying an egg a day (except during their winter break). So I guess I wouldn't see the point of needing to improve those numbers further. I don't know if you would be paying more for them but just for eggs I think any old Cot quail would get you what you want. I don't know; maybe I'm missing something.

I usually do some golden layers every year from JMF. They are a pretty color variety of coturnix, and lay a pretty, almost marbled egg. I like those as well as the JMF jumbos. both lay an XL quail egg and can be feather sexed which is a bonus. The Golden layers are a good layer as well.

Thanks Ron, good to know.
