Someone told me to put a golf ball in each nesting box. They said so chickens won't peck the eggs and they'll know where to lay...should do or shouldn't do?

Are your hens laying elsewhere? One of my first hens decided that laying in an outside sink was a good idea, so before she actually played, i would pick her up out of the sink and put her in the nest - she soon got the idea and used the nests. If your hens are laying outside the coop, then try keeping them in the coop until midday. By that time they should have layed and it will encourage them to use the nests.

Using golf balls or even plastic Easter eggs is a very common way of telling your hens "this is where the eggs go" so if your girls are laying elsewhere, try them in the nesting box to see if that helps.

Thanks for joining us!

Golf balls usually work - if perchance the hens manage to hatch a few - the top brands can sell for $ 1. each much better than the price of chicken eggs.

LOL! Welcome to BYC, Smiley Chicks. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've always used either golf balls or ceramic eggs in my nesting boxes and they have worked great. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.
