Well we had a great Thanksgiving, and the collective family met the Dreamgirls, most of them for the first time.
But, I don't get the quiet looks and the little nods back and forth one when I give them a simple explanation of getiing the girls ready for company.

The girls had dirty feet. I have a bad back. So I set up a foot bath station on the table at waist height with three bowls on the table that sits outside the coop. Kind of like a dredging station used during cooking.
One bowl had warm water soapy water, one had rinse water, and one had warm extra virgin olive oil. I figured that would take care of moisturizing and any potential scaly leg mite issues at the same time.
I took each chicken and set them in each up to the top of their legs and went from bowl to bowl. They really seemed to enjoy it, with soft clucks and purrs. A quick toweling, and voila! they were clean and done! (Ramp was a little slippery for a while tho)

Of course, the comments ranged from where's the marinade? Garlic?? Did you set up the Grill?

Alas, I feel an intervention is in my future!

Yes, I agree.... you need to host an intervention to get the collective family on board with the ways of chickens. Maybe sneak a chick or two under their trees this Christmas. The gift tag can say, "To know me is to love me." or something along those lines....

Aww, I think that's wonderful that you care for your chickens that well. I stopped caring if people thought I was weird a long time ago. I would much rather sit in the backyard all day with my dogs and chickens and cats than go out clubbing or partying. Most people my age find that weird, but to tell you the truth, I would much rather spend time with my animals than most of the people I know

Ya know. When you go to the coop/barn/pen and see your chickens you do not have to have a excuse for anyone.
On warm evenings we sit in the barn with the chickens running about. We read, talk feed a few and just enjoy them.

It is really a special time. If you feel you want to do something for your birds no one needs to know. You do not need an intervention, you need more time with your chickens.

They do not require you to pet them. They do not require you to do anything but watch them.

OH thank you !!! I have to show this to my DH !!!

He thinks Im crazy because in nice weather I sit in my lawn chair and read in the run with my girls. I even share a snack with them !

He really is just jealous of them I think.

I was just thrilled for once to be doing something completely frivolous, silly, and not medically necessary after having gone thru three separate occasions with my one hen where I almost lost her.
My rule with all the animals is "the pleasure of our company should suffice!" meaning that is why we are together, because of the enjoyment factor.
