I am on the search for a great all-around breed. I have done some research, but I would love to see fellow BYCers opinions. We are hoping to add to our current laying flock to have a colorful egg basket.
Currently for our laying hens we have...

2 Naked Neck Hens
1 Rhode Island Red Hen
1 Barred Rock Hen
2 Black Australrop Pullets

We are for sure getting more Naked Necks, RIRs,and BRs

Thanks!

If you want a colorful egg basket, you can't go wrong with Ameraucanas!!

Also, Faverolles will lay eggs that vary from off white, to pinkish, to tan, to brown!! They are pretty to look at, are sweet and docile, and are dual purpose - supposed to be excellent meat birds!!

I have never had barred rocks but for a great all around bird I always choose faverolles but then again I am very baised. My Faverolles are great layers, hardy, super sweet, meaty, and beautiful so to me they are the ideal breed. You will probably get a diffrent answer for everyone who posts on this thread. I would also say for a diverse egg basket Wellsummers and True Ameraucana are awsome breeds and I loved having both of them.

I will look more into Faverolles, I have heard many, many great things about the breed

And true Ameracaunas will be on the list, along with Easter Eggers, and Orpingtons.

Thanks for all of the quick replies!

Go with Faverolles - There are sooo many BR's, BO's, and RIR's out there, and I always like seeing different, more rare, and (sorry, my opinion!) prettier birds around!

And of course true Ameraucanas - Such darling girls and handsome boys! Easter Eggers are just as nice, it depends on what one is looking for - But EE's and Ameraucanas I do have experience with, and would definitely endorse them.

Delawares. Barnevelders. Plymouh Rocks. The are all calm (not flighty), steady layers, even friendly personalities... and all big enough for carcass.
