I am looking for a hen to buy for fun. She can be expensive but not too much more than $100. She needs to be a really pretty hen that doesn't fly too much either. I also don't want a bantam. Any one have any ideas of pretty breeds that I should check out?

Asils or Aseels are very affectionate, do well by themselves, not the most persistent flyers . Beatiful? Very subjective.

Also great at hatching eggs.

I would suggest a Salmon Faverolle hen. Not only are they among the most gorgeous of breeds, but they are very calm and gentle and good layers of large, brown eggs. I have posted a pic of one below. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your hen.)

Thank you for the input guys. I forgot to say that I do already have 10 chickens and plan on getting more this year so she won't be alone. Both very pretty chickens!

Polish! But I guess those are pretty small. Mine are still bigger than bantams.

Mottled Houdans (LOVE them!!!)
German spitzhaubens
These are some of my favorites!!!

Do you have a preference as far as egg color goes? Are flighty birds okay or would you prefer docile?

For fun you could look through Feathersite's breed pages. http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/BRKPoultryPage.html#Chickens

Any of the crested breeds are fun to look at, though the ones we have had have been on the skittish side. Cochins are big, easy going fluff balls that come in a variety of colors. My daughter wanted Buttercups this year and likes those along with the Cochins.

I do have Faverolles and they are very docile. Good ones are hard to find though.

I definitely prefer docile but I already have some very nice chickens so temperament is not my first priority. I'll probably look into cochins. I got one giant cochin chick but it looks like it's a rooster so I'll probably have some half cochin mixes when he matures which will be fun.

Araucanas are unusual looking. They have ear tufts but no tails.
I also like the White Faced Spanish, very ornamental and beautiful, but am not sure what they cost.
