Good breeds for Central FL? Hot, harsh weather, humid, mosquitoes.

I like the easter eggers and glad to hear people recommending them. Are they large medium small? I thought all small chickens were called bantams? Can you tell what color eggs they will lay when they are little, or have to wait till they lay their first eggs? :)

Easter Eggers are generally medium-sized birds (5-6 pounds) however there are bantam versions. There are small Standard breeds, but Bantams are VERY small! One of the reasons people get EEs are because of the surprise with eggs! You never know what color you could get!

I believe you meant to quote @Farmer Connie and not me? Lol! All is forgiven!!! :lau
oh you're right, I did, I'm sorry :p I'm a space cadette.. Other worlds coming in clear but my own is hazy sometimes lol So glad you are a forgiving person and thanks for bringing it to my attention! Thank you for your help too though..I'm leaning towards Connies Whyandottes and your easter eggers..do you think 1 of each of those would get along ok together? I know you're not familiar with the Key West Gypsy Chickens to say how they might do with them.. Thanks again :)

I've heard that chickens tend to gravitate towards those of their own breed, but I think that if they are all 'loners' then they will be ok! Best wishes for you and your flock! :)

A standard is just the regular size chicken. But every standard breed varies in size. Bantams are just small chickens. They vary in size too.

thank you! I'll be looking into all this and maybe I can find some ways around that? I would really like to have a few different breeds but if they just would not be happy then I'll reconsider. I think the first thing I should do in light of this information is chat with the Key West Gypsy Chicken lady in Homestead and ask if they get along with other breeds at all.. If I have to get all one breed because of the Gypsies, it would for sure be the Gypsies. That would make it simple at least to get them all at once! :)

Don't let what I say deter you from getting the chickens you want! I have 4 EEs and 1 Silkie. Although I have noticed the Silkie is timider, (That's why she is getting a friend Sunday) they all get along great. If you want multiple breeds, get multiple breeds!!! :) Ordinances are hard because they are so constraining! My ordinance only allows 6 hens! Best wishes!

No I won't ..I'm just going to look into it and see what other people think about the Gypsy breeds compatability and tips for I can do to help them get along better and such.. like making sure they are close in size for example :) If a whole lot of people tell me they will just be much happier 1 breed i would consider it..or something like make sure I get two of each maybe, two breeds, 4 chickens. I definitely want to house them all together..I can only have 4 here but 4 is better than what it was =none, till last month! :) Thanks so much for this fantastic info:)
