good breeds for hot summers in the deep south?

I'm in North Florida as well and have not found any of the dual-purpose breeds that did not do well here so long as I managed them right. Shade, airflow, and fresh, clean water at all times. In the heat of the day they'll lay up in the shade. In the mornings and late afternoons they'll be active. Pretty much like any kind of livestock down here.

I don't really have a recommendation being the newbie that I am, but was wondering about something.

Being the wattles, combs, and panting are three things that help to cool chickens... Has anyone noticed whether chickens with large combs and wattles appear to handle hot weather better than chickens with smaller combs and wattles?

Thanks!
Ed

Any of the single comb breeds will do fine in your area. We have hit 90's here in eastern south area on TN. My rocks do very well even laying in the heat. They spend most of the time out in our woods. My broodies in coop are still sitting even though panting. Only ones I would worry about is the more heavy feathered chickens like Orpingtons and those with feathers on feet. Chickens are hardy and can take alot so do not worry too much. Just enjoy them.

I'm in Mobile, and I have not had problems with heat with any of my birds. As long as they have protection from direct sunlight, pretty well any breed should do fine in the South. Like any animal, they need shade or some resprite from the heat. Shade trees, a fan for breeze, plenty of fresh water, whatever you can give them to help break they heat in the worst of the year. In my experience, they will not lay as well during the hottest part of the summer, although my turkens did continue to lay throughout the summer.
