Well I just bought 14 st run americana chicks, 4 mystery reds and 2 golden comets. I go out just now to feed, water and get eggs and bam. 1 bird dead on the ground. My dads favorite our 1yr Rhode island red no sign of anything wrong just cold dead. I have no idea what happened no sign of a fight, nor predator, just dead. Then i look and a SLW is sleeping on the rost, i pick it up and it had laid its insides out. SO out with the axe and took care of her. SO I have lost 2 birds out of my 16, 2 for no reason I can find and no idea if its something that will get my other birds. and 1 I had to kill. So I guess I have to hope I do not lose anymore and that I get more hens in the straight runs. Any ideas what I can look for to see if I have a problem, my other birds look fine.

"Whenever you have livestock, you'll have dead stock." Keep that phrase in your head, do your best to keep them as safe as possible, have a good flock management program.....and pray.

Time to put on your detective hat.

Water, fresh and clean?

Change foods lately? Moldy feed can kill a bird pretty fast.

How are the other birds?

Any sign of disease?

Are they all healthy?

Did you quarantine the new arrivals?Any way they got into any chemicals, pesticides etc.?

Back to the food, go through or dump it, smell it, any chance it is moldy?

Go to the feed store where you bought it, let them know your situation,
ask if anyone else has had this problem,
ask to see where they store their food, notice anything, i.e., chemicals in the area etc.
