Good evening! I am very new to raising chickens and I am looking forward to learning as much as I can!
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My first flock of 11 chicks hatched at Meyer Hatchery in March 15. They arrived at my home in Central NY on March 17. Two didn’t make make it past a couple days.
My second flock of chicks were purchased from Tractor Supply last Saturday. I chose 10 bantams.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
9 standard size and 10 bantams
(3) What breeds do you have?
Standards—
Welsummer -2
Buff Orpington -1
Speckled Sussex -1
Green Queen -1
Easter Egger -1
Black Australorp -1
Cream Legbar -1
Black Laced Wyandotte -1
Bantams-
definitely some Porcelain D’Uccle and Mille Fleur. Possibly a Golden Seabright and Old English.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I LOVE their personalities and seeing how quickly they grow and change.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love gardening, hand spinning, crocheting, knitting, reading. There is not enough time in a day.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have four children ages 22, 20, 16, 11. My husband and I have been married for over 23 years.
I have a Border Collie cross named Jack, 2 cats inside, 1 outside, and 2 bunnies.
I’m employed currently as a housekeeper at an assisted living facility but am hoping to leave that job by the end of June to be home full time!! That means more time with my chickens!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
In search of answers concerning chickens, forum posts often come up in my Bing searches. I like what I read! Since my older chicks will be moving to the coop soon, I’m looking for as much information as I can! thanks for having me!
