Good, friendly breed

My little little bantam mutt EE's are really friendly- They jump right in my hand , will eat out of my hand and sing to me while I'm at the coop. I've got some feed store chicks here about two weeks old, and the two little NN love to be picked up and scratched and petted. The other ones not so much- I think they may be Gl cochins but not sure yet.

A lot of people I've talked to really like the EE's and Ameracaunas (sp) . Also I've had a lot of people tell me they like the NN - They are gentle and lay well and have heard they make good mothers. But don't know from personal experience.

I have an EE. She's friendly, but on her terms. She's my best talker. She'll let you pick her up and hold her, but you have to do it her way. However, as cute and sweet as she is, she's not a great layer. Compared with the RIRs who each laid over 300 in their first year, she only laid 245. Not only that, but she's just started laying again after a 7 month break. Yes - SEVEN! We

her anyway.

Well (a) you have to remember that I'm a Silkie freak, so anything other than a Silkie is is going to be flighty to me, and (b) my BR's came from a feed store so they probably didn't exactly inherit the calm temperment of a backyard flock...

I also kept the BR's and the RIR's together when I had them, so the flightyness and aggressiveness of the RIR's could have rubbed off.

Adding another vote for the Light Brahmas - I'm picking up more chicks tomorrow. I have 7 laying hens of LB and they are all hardy, friendly, calm and lay VERY well (large to extra large eggs, often have double yolkers).

They are piggies, though, so if feed costs are a factor, ya might want to look for a different breed

Barred rocks and brahmas get my vote. They each have different personality traits to recommend them. Rock roos do have a reputation. Brahmas get huge; the boys don't have a rep to live down. Plain and simple farmyard mixes are another great choice.
