Good idea or not?

I have an area in my back yard that we're going to use for corn next year. It's getting tilled up in a few weeks and I was considering planting winter wheat and oats in the space. In the spring I was going to let the girls loose on it.

Would that be okay for the girls?

Also anyone know a place to buy wheat and oats that isn't TSC? I'm in Ohio if that helps.

Oats will not survive the winter. It has to be planted in the spring. Wheat works well.

Where do you live in Ohio? Most any small country mill would probably have some.

I think I know where I can get some from a neighbor. Last I was there he had a 60,000 bu bin nearly full.

This is also near the time of year when wheat is planted and you might be able to get it from a farmer that is planting.

I wouldn't feed wheat grass to my girls if I had any. It is, however, a fine spring forage for chickens.
