Hi, I'm Denise & my babies are 1 week old today!!! I have 13 bantams of various breeds and am excited to be a new mom. (Did it for real almost 21 years ago to my darling daughter (Amelia) and it took this long to get the urge back!

) My DH & I are looking forward to a very busy summer...building a coop, re-building our deck, re-furbishing a hot tub, and that is only the tip of the... (well you know what I mean!)

I'm looking forward to also learning about my babies, here and from friends in my neighborhood. Where do I go first???

I don't know if I'm crazy or just too ignorant, but Amelia would like a duck! I was told (@ the hatchery) to wait a week before introducing a duck to my babies, so my "little" ones could get a head start in getting bigger, since ms/mr ducky will be so much bigger... Any suggestions/hints, tips/tricks, or discouragement? She (Amelia) is living with us, as her Sweetie is in Afgan, not coming home for a while, and I think she would be happily preoccupied with a ducky, waiting for him to come home. Since I'm the one who gets to choose what kind of duck, I would like to get an Indian Runner (they're too cute!) Again, any suggestions as to this decision and possibly to my sanity would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance and I look forward to getting to know BYC and You!
Denise

PS: I just found the "template" so here goes:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
See Above!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
See Above!

(3) What breeds do you have?
Several, just can't remember what they all are Except they are all bantam... Silver Seabright (2), Golden Seabright (1), Black Spanish(1), Black Silkie (2), that's what I remember...next time I'm gonna go slower - with Camera & note pad!)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I think my neighbor told me and I'm sure I came across BYC a million times in all my research!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to scrapbook (when the mood stricks), sculpt (also, when the timing is right), and watch TV/movies while doing those things! Oh, and we're starting a garden! (No TV out there!)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am married ...happily, and as mentioned above, have a daughter. I own/make/design my own jewelry business, have a snooty Pomeranian, a sweet (albeit airhead) Shelty, a huge pond with 50+ koi & other assorted fish, & 2 Bettas. All this on an intown acre with fruit trees, woodshop (DH's) and lots of grass!!! I think my babies will like it in a couple months!

WHEW! Scary to see it in print! ;-)

Welcome Denise, from California! What a fun project you've taken on! I've put some material on my website below about raising hens (might be helpful) but don't know much about ducks and what they need. Only suggestion I have is for you to two ducks rather than one. I think that everyone needs a similar pal. Best of luck to you and your family.

Thanks Cambriagardener & chickflick247 for the sweet welcomes. (Except that I'm in Boise IDAHO!) Tee Hee!!!

I will check into that 2fer deal about the ducky! ...Maybe biting off more than I can chew! (I remember the movie Babe and the duck (Ferdinad?) that thought he was a crowing Roo!) Hmmmm! I'll be going checking out your website when I have more time... Got chicks to look at now! ;-)

Hello,

It would be best to wait a week or so because, yes, the duck is going to be bigger and with Bantams--well, it might squish them if they pile for any reason. Plus it is not recommended to keep ducks and chickens together even though it is done.

What type of duck are you looking for? I actually hatched out 3 Pilgrim goslings and they are in with the chicks (Black Copper Marans, Ameraucana, Orpington and Light Sussex) She (the newest gosling hatched this morning) is so much bigger than the chicks who are days old to a few weeks old. However they aren't smushing each other and doing well together.

Oh.... ducks and geese make a big mucky water mess so be prepared. I separate the ducks and goslings out after a few days due to that reason. Welcome!
