Sorry I'm not being creative--but these basics seem to cover it all!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
- YES! Very new to chickens. As new as the 5 day old chicks I have now. I did do some homework before ordering and my husband and I have been planning on chickens once we had a fence put up for our dogs.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
-Seven chicks

(3) What breeds do you have?
- I was adventurous and ordered a rare breed assortment for my first round. The only ones I can ID right now are a Cochin, Polish and Sumatra....I have my thoughts about the rest but I'll have to wait a bit longer.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
- I've never done it before so my answers may not be the same in a few months. I'm wanting fresh eggs--which was motivation for raising chickens. I also like having them around.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
- Gardening and dance. I know the gardening will be a challenge with chickens

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
- Very small household...2 dogs and the hubby. We both work full time so we stay busy!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
- Found it because everytime I tried to google something about chickens I kept getting this forum--so much information I had to join!

OMG I forgot to put where I'm from too-- Cajun here living in Lake Charles, LA

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Have you got your coop built yet? Those babies grow FAST!

I have to admit we lucked out. Bought a place with a couple of acres (finally!) and the previous owner already had a decent little coop! We just had to install a fence for our mutts--one that kept them in the yard and away from the coop area. Now that we've taken care of that (and I disinfected the coop best I could) we were finally able to order chicks!

Now that's a sweet find!
If you'd like to start a new thread under Coop & Run - Design, Construction & Maintenance and post lots of pictures of what you have, we can offer advice to improve it's function for you and the chickens and well as critique it's level of predator proofness (is that a word?). It sounds like you are off to a great start.

Thanks! I'll have to get some pics. The coop seems secure...I plan on trying out free ranging. Makes me nervous but my neighbors chickens seem to survive just fine. My brother has only lost 2 chickens to predators out of many years--he just said make sure to have a rooster. Being I did straight run on my chicks I know I'll end up with a rooster to keep (and a few to give/sell no doubt LOL).
