Good Morning from SW LA!

:lau
Well from what I hear, some cockerels can be so unruly they make your decision pretty easy when the time comes, especially when others are just true gentlemen. I've been researching roosters quite a bit because I do plan to have one for my flock once we move back out to the country.

I will say this...I've only had these chicks for a couple days and that little cute chunky Cochin in the group had better hope it's a hen. I know there's pecking order getting established and all but that's the only one that I can already see is going to be a butt lol! Thinks it owns the feeder, waterer and even the pine shavings others pick up, lol!

Egg Basket.jpg You will fit right in here!

And the eggs will be awesome!

Maybe that little cochin was an orphan and never got enough to eat and now it's power mad. Aw.

Put photos up at "What Breed or Gender is this," and you will get some expert opinions.

A friend of mine called it perfectly---looks like a sumo wrestler. Last night it discovered jumping. Now it leaps into the crowd of chicks and spreads it stubby wings while the others scurry. Not even kidding...it's hilarious. Power mad it is! You should see the fight it puts up to not be handled!

I hate to say it but that kinda behavior might be a cockerel...that's been my experience anyways...the rowdy ones are cockerels.

Sorry I'm not being creative--but these basics seem to cover it all!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
- YES! Very new to chickens. As new as the 5 day old chicks I have now. I did do some homework before ordering and my husband and I have been planning on chickens once we had a fence put up for our dogs.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
-Seven chicks

(3) What breeds do you have?
- I was adventurous and ordered a rare breed assortment for my first round. The only ones I can ID right now are a Cochin, Polish and Sumatra....I have my thoughts about the rest but I'll have to wait a bit longer.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
- I've never done it before so my answers may not be the same in a few months. I'm wanting fresh eggs--which was motivation for raising chickens. I also like having them around.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
- Gardening and dance. I know the gardening will be a challenge with chickens

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
- Very small household...2 dogs and the hubby. We both work full time so we stay busy!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
- Found it because everytime I tried to google something about chickens I kept getting this forum--so much information I had to join!

OMG I forgot to put where I'm from too-- Cajun here living in Lake Charles, LA

Across the river from you in SE Texas. Love to go eat in LC!! I have a few Black Copper Marans, some eggs in the incubator along with some Dampierre eggs and a few Delaware eggs as well. Had a dog attack last fall that put me out of the chicken business for a few months.
Raised racing homer pigeons for years but the same dog killed my pigeons as well. Absolutely no use for an uncontrollable Pit Bull.
Had a barnyard mix of good chickens for years mostly descended from Delaware’s but the occasional New Hampshire as well.
I fly control line model airplanes as a hobby. Notice all my hobbies have wings? I do fish, crab and eat Cajun! Momma was 100% Cajun whirlwind. Daddy was a confused all American Boy!
