Good Morning, my wife and I are new to raising chickens. As others we got our chicks from TSC. We got them about too weeks ago at about a week old. All Dominique's, we have a decent size back yard. Looking forward to getting them into the coop.
Now for my first question. I have moved the heat lamp up a few times, should the lamp be left on all the time or should it be turned off at times.
Thanks
Anthony

Left on, because little chicks need heat! Unless its warm. Then its alright to turn off. The temperature in their brooder should be around 35 degrees Celsius or 95 degrees Fahrenheit at all times until they grow older, decreasing 5 degrees Farenheit every wk until about 10 wks of age. Then they can go outside and see the world!

Hope I helped! :3

Welcome to Backyardchickens.com aka BYC! :frow
We are glad you joined our flock.
At 3 weeks I usually have my lamp off.
Turn it off and watch them...to see if they start huddling up or not.
I think they will be fine without heat already.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've joined us.:ya When it comes to brooding, ask 10 chicken people and you're likely to get 12 answers:oops: Mine stay in brooder for 3 weeks, and they'll tell us when they no longer need heat... Depending on weather swings in the fall, I might leave it on longer or at least for the mornings and evenings it just depends on how they act. If they huddle up under it, they're still using it, if they huddle away from it, they're not. After 3 weeks unless its really cold in the morning, they go into a shelter on pasture where they stay for 5 more weeks before getting integrated into the flock. During their stay on pasture they move every couple days... Again welcome.
