I had three hatchees yesterday after I got home! Very exciting since the first guy managed to suicide himself. Learning curve! I made their brooder safer (switched out the DIY heat mat for the heat lamp) for them so no more squished themselves in the folds and got stuck.
This morning, I found the three of them with little chick butts and legs sticking out of the fuzzy toddler slipper I put in there for cuddles. I would have taken a photo, but I seriously thought they were all dead. They were fine! I had no idea how derpy they were! I did remove the slipper as a precaution as I don't trust them not to somehow get stuck inside (I had no idea they'd be able to get into the opening!); they still have a stuffed animal to cuddle with.
Not sure if the others will hatch as it's day 19 now. Candling these little guys is pretty difficult for a first-timer (I tried right before lockdown)! I'll just leave them in there for a few more days and then write them off. Thinking about egg-topsy but it might be too much. I definitely had a few humidity fluctuations that could have caused trouble, but I had the temperature on point the whole time. They were also shipped eggs that sat outside in the 40s for maybe 5 hours.
52 eggs coming in next week. I have the quail rails installed and plan to hit up the dollar store to get some baskets to divide for next lockdown. I have the lumber here and 1/4 gauge wire on order for my big double hutch (6'x36" stacked) for my meat bird project. Now I'm thinking I want to make some all-wire breeder cages for a color side project since I have a bunch of mystery eggs coming in. Definitely have to learn more about genetics first. My work today will be watching the Myshire farms videos on the subject.
