Is there a recommended book on chickens health? My chicken sits alot even when the dog comes around she wont move. She has runny stuff coming out of her behind and my son says there is something orange in there.

Welcome to BYC. Your feedstore may sell a good poultry book or have a recommendation, but you can also get tons of free info here on BYC by going to the top of the page, and looking through the Learning Center. Have you learned about the symptoms of coccidiosis? Symptoms are sleepiness, weakness, sitting or standing puffed up, diarrhea with or without blood, poor appetite, and ruffled feathers. Treatment is Corid (amprollium, Ampromed, Amprol) from the cattle medicines section of your feed store. Dosage is 2 tsp of liquid, or 1.5 tsp of the powder Corid per gallon of water for 5-7 days, and treat all chickens. I searched for a chicken health book last year and found only 2 possibilities, one was just a catalog of diseases and not what I was looking for. But Chicken Health for Dummies is easy to understand and loaded with information.

There's a lot of free information on this site and on the net in general, but remember most is opinion and although offered in good intention is not always correct. The learning center articles on specific problems are quite helpful.

One chicken book that could be helpful is the Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow.

But, as the above posters aid, you can get lots of information just from the people on Backyard Chickens!

A lot of information is free for the taking if you learn what diseases are common in chickens and poultry. BYC has a search at the top of this page that contains thousands of threads, and Google contains quite a few university and professional sites to look up information about conditions and diseases. That said, when I first got chicks, or 8 months before, actually, I read 4 books and everything I could get my hands on, to read about anything to do with chicks, feed, coops, diseases to look out for, breeds, eggs and egg color, and on and on. Anyone can post here on the forums, so you do need to filter what you listen to. Most everyone is helpful though to try and help you solve problems. I think it helps to set up a bookmark folder for chicken health to file the links folks offer for future reference. Saves a lot of time if you really need to find good info.
