Good treats for baby chicks?

Hi everyone I'm new to this. I haven't got my chicks yet I wanted to learn as much as possible. I was wondering what I all need to get when I get them? Like what is the best food? Are like other animals where I need to slowly introduce food if they are not on the same one?

I like the Purina Medicated Start & Grow (red bag- and it's some kind of vinyl so I make cool tote-bags out of them) unless they been vaccinated for Cocci - then the medicated nullifies any immunity. It's (The Purina) is not as powdery as some others, so they'll be less waste. I have 10 chicks and 50 lbs. lasted 6 weeks, but I also make them a "meal" everyday. I just switched them to flock raiser today and they seem to really like it. And the TerraMigo natural pine bedding. It's pelleted, absorbent and not so dusty.

I was introduced to apple cider vinegar on this site. I use Braggs raw- unfiltered. It says 'from the Mother' on the label. I use 1 capful per qt. waterer. I used to give them their choice of plain, too, but they only drank the ACV. I chopped up old-fashioned oatmeal to sprinkle on top of their food once a day from about day 3 and I still give them a handful, no longer chopped, every morning. The maniacs now expect it. Introduce them to yogurt soon, you can mix it up with a little starter. Less messy and they like it. By all means, read about 'poopy butt'. It's pretty much a given. I don't envy you there! You'll find this site to be a great info center. I'm excited for you. they are so fun.

Awesome thread! Loving all the info! I'm trying to glean as much as possible for my first time chicks arriving in a few weeks!

Quick question - My chicks are 2 days old - Last night I brought in a clump of dirt with dandelions and violets in it and they LOVED it. One will get a little something in it's mouth and run fast and they all run after her thinking she's got a bug or something. They were especially excited about the roots and the dirt. I'm just wondering if I need to add grit or is the dirt that surrounds the clumps of weeds enough?

Just found the answer to my own question in Storey's Guide - there might not be enough in the dirt - offer grit.

I have some organic spring mix lettuce and I want to give some to my 1 1/2 week old baby chicks. Do I need to cut it up or serve it a special way?

I just got chicks Saturday. I had one that was trying to take a dust bath in their crumbles. So I put a small dish of sand in their area. They peck it a lot and they enjoy sleeping on it. Is it ok for them to eat the sand? It is just regular sand from a broken bag we had.

My 11 chicks are two weeks old yesterday. I just started giving them a meal worm in my hand. The bolder ones figured it out right away but the browns ones don't know what's going on. LOL. The few bold ones snatch it from my hand and then run with it and the others kind of run after it trying to figure out what's so exciting. I throw a little bird gravel into their food dish. I hope this is OK. Not all of them have tried a worm yet.

But now the bolder ones come running to my hand looking for the treat and pick at my rings, etc. That's all I have given them so far. I thought I would wait until they're 3 weeks old before introducing vegetables, etc. Plus it makes them over stimulated and they get testy with each other. I tell them to stop fighting and get along with your sisters.....lol.

I'm really surprised to see so many people feeding chick grit. I haven't ever fed any of mine grit and they seem to do fine. I only feed starter/grower though for the first six weeks so maybe that's why I haven't had issues with chicks not having chick grit? Adults free range so they forage their own grit out of the driveway.
