Ok, 2 yr old tufted buffs. Last year one of my girls at 1 went broody and set, but the eggs gradually disappeared from the nest (inside the day house inside the fence that is hotwired. Had seen a snake, also a 1-1.5 " inch hole that probably was mouse or rat. Ok so this year she goes broody a couple days ago. She only had 2 eggs as I was taking them, plus I gave her another from the other females nest. This year I cut a huge tupperware bin down and added drain holes for nest boxes that sit on the ground and gave straw, she added some feathers.
Now, they free range grass and get layer pellet at night + osyter shell if they want. They have 2 large pans to get in. I have not seen them breed and haven't checked eggs because they are in fridge waiting to be blown (some I had already done). I may go crack some to check for fertility..... but wonder about two things. !) the other goose seems to not to have broody tendencies, is this normal, should I count her out as breeding stock? Or give her more time. (she has her own mate and night pen and nest.)
Second, do they need a bigger pool ? I had a large plastic pond, but they didn't use it much and it's location was bad , so I took it out and am putting it in somewhere else when my son gets home from college

I am just staring to learn about broody geese myself as mine are a year old, so i was hoping some replied.

As far as the pool, I don't know as they need a big pool. My understanding is they need to be able to dunk their whole head in clean water periodically. Although my geese don't spend a lot of time in their pool, they do seem to enjoy the grooming and preening in the water.

They need a kiddie pool at least to take their baths in, they'll get it dirty right away of course.

They also need clean water, or at least deserve it, and that's tricky. I'm thinking of trying "chicken nipples" for a dispenser of clean water for them to drink, then they don't have to drink their yukky bath water.
