I have a goose egg. I do not have an incubator. I am getting one for my birthday because I am going to be hatching some sort of waterfowl to raise over the Summer. I am using a Reptile Heater. I am not sure how hot it gets, but it gets very hot. I placed the egg in a plastic container, and experimented with different positions. I had no idea that the heating pad got so hot, and when I checked it it felt quite hot. I then tried with different positions. I did candle the egg and did not see anything except the yolk. It was just freshly laid though. Would it have died from getting too hot? I'd like to know how to tell if eggs are fertile by candling or if there are other methods. This is my first time incubating an egg, but I have raised ducks and geese before. I'd really like to know all about incubating using a heating pad.

Yes you can cook the egg. If you don't have an incubator at least get a thermometer, they should not be going over 100 degrees. You can spray the egg with cool water to keep the temperature down. Better to get an incubator though, because you won't have to babysit the egg all the time.
