Goose Egg Pipped but not Hatched

I have my first and only goose egg in the incubator with a couple duck eggs and guinea eggs to keep him company. Today is day # 28. Saturday the guinea eggs and one duck egg hatched. I have the goose egg and 7 duck eggs left. Couple of the duck eggs are rocking, and one has a pip.

Now my goose pipped his egg on Sunday but still hasn't hatched yet. The hole is big enough you can just see his beak in there. He is talking up a storm. When do I start to worry that he hasn't hatched yet? I am watching the temp and humidity levels. I would be so bummed if he doesn't make it out.

Thanks!

*I have VERY little bird hatching experience*

This being said, if he pipped Sunday, I'd take him out and have a look, if it were me. I hatched 2 duck eggs in January, one was 'breech', and required my assistance. I did wait a full 24 hours before giving some help. I pick off a tiny bit of shell, then CAREFULLY pull back a tiny bit of the WHITE membrane. If you do not see blood vessels/no bleeding, I'd pick off another TINY bit of shell, and very carefully peel back a little bit of the white membrane (NOT the inner membrane, which contains the blood vessels). If you see any blood at all, stop immediately and put him back in the bator. I wish I had taken some pics for you to see. :0( If he is really ready to come out, the inner membrane will be clear/light pink with no blood. He may just be malpositioned in the egg.

If I do not see any blood vessels in the very inner membrane, I assume that everything is absorbed, and I'd peel a bit of that back to give him some wiggle room. Then put him back in the bator, and see if he can wriggle his way out. If no more progress is made, repeat this sequence. I'd also be concerned about the duck eggs, so if you do help, you've gotta make it really quick.

If you do decide to intervene, do so very carefully! Good luck!!! I hope your ducks make it, too :0)

Pinto, Sorry I did not see this earlier. Glad that the chick is still talking. I say help it. here are the highlights in case you need it
1.Get your bathroom up to 99 degrees and humid (run shower)
2. have wet warm rag or paper towels handy.
3. take the egg and with a blunt pair of tweezers slowly take tiny bits of shell off at the point it is already pipped. working around the egg just as the chick would had it zipped on its own. Avoid taking off big chunks of shell but you want to gt just little nips with eh tweezers. Go very very slowly remember it would have taken the chick commonly 24 hours to do this. DO not try to do it in 30 minutes.
any sign of blood cover the open area with a warm wet cloth and place back in incubator for an hour or two. then try again. continue until the chick starts being able to break the shell themselves.

Two days from pip and still nothing tells me this chick is stuck. be prepared for it to be shrink wrapped and you will have to soak the membrane off with damp cloths etc. Warmth and exhaustion are your two biggest concerns at this time. Chill weakens the chick further.
Again go slow as in hours to chip your way around the egg.

Well of my 11 eggs all but two where late quitters. about 6 of them as late as day 18 or 19. One chick is still working on hatching but getting pretty close and making lots of noise. one other chick is running around in the brooder. 2 chicks from 21 eggs. I have 5 more at day 9 in the incubator. I am not doing anything with these. not candling not moving to the hatcher not nothin. stop turning on day 19 and wait to see if they hatch.

well for now I am only going to get 2 more chicks out of these 11 eggs. I was not getting any rocking or anythign from the other 9 so I opened one. it had quit at about day 12. so I checked another (gave it several tests before opening) again a quitter only this one was at day 18 or 19. ended up all 9 eggs had quit anywhere from day 12 to day 19. I think I lost about 6 on the day we moved them to the hatcher. So we are eliminating that from our procedure. I will also not be doing any candling of any kind on Serama eggs from now on. They will just set in the incubator until they pip and then be moved to a seperate incubator to hatch. will see if that works any better.
anyway we are waiting for the second chick to finish hatching but he is fairly well along in zipping so I don't expect it to be a long wait.

I hope everyone's hatches go well!

Penturner, Sorry you aren't having the best of luck!

This is my first hatch (due the 19) so I am not sure how successful I'll be...

Good news, the goose is out and looking fine! Thanks for everyone's words of wisdom! I did pick a little at the shell, things looked okay inside. I did a bit at a time. The duck hatched out of his egg and then bumbled around into the goose, and that stirred the goose up and he pushed his way out of his egg. Hooray! They are both in the brooder and doing well.
