My girl is a pied Cotton Patch goose the last of a small flock I had to re-home. I kept her because I was not sure how healthy she was, being the runt and the only pied gosling. But she has become a beautiful girl. I was tickled when 2 Canadas started hanging around our yard this summer and I encouraged them by giving them morning and evening treats when I cared for my own birds. Soon the female Canada disappeared and after a little while the male took up with my girl. I was so looking forward to their goslings and then he died. Just slumped over dead near the pond! My girl started laying eggs that week hence my question about harboring sperm. I discovered her on a nest of 5 eggs in front of the house. I put her up in a pen with them hoping she'd go broody. No joy. I searched for local goslings and have a bead on some Pilgrims nearby ready to hatch. I was hoping to take advantage of her maternal hormones but I think she has already slacked off on her egg laying. . . unless she has them cleverly hidden. But she is good natured and I have hopes that she will accept any goslings I get in the next couple of weeks.
