So I'm building a coop on my property soon and starting to brainstorm what all I want to put in it. I'm thinking around 4-6 hens and a couple ducks because ducks eggs are the bomb. I'd like to have something in there to help protect everyone from predators. I plan on keeping them in a super secure coop and run most of the time and letting them out to free range a couple times a week. We don't have a lot of predators in the area, but I imagine some may be drawn in once chickens are here. Definitely have hawks and crows to worry about.
I've had a rooster in the past get taken by a hawk, theoretically saving his hens. I've also seen a lot of critters be pretty intimidated by a hissing goose. Is either significantly more effective? Preferably without getting itself killed in the process? I know I'm gonna be pretty attached, my last rooster was such a cool guy.
I'm also factoring noise, whether it's going to be more annoying to me and my neighbors to have a rooster crowing constantly or if geese are nosier than I remember. From what I've heard so far they mostly only get loud when something's going on?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! Probably won't be getting chicks til next spring at the soonest so I've got plenty of time to figure out what's going to be the best fit for us.
