What is the ambient temp in your area right now? Those eggs may actually be too hot. Mama knows best...So eggs under a broody animal is not like when we put them in an incubator and we start freakin if we lift the lid?
Come to think of it, it might be a humidity adjustment thing as far as your goose getting off the nest goes, too. I would just try to sit tight and relax, sounds like she is doing a great job!Well the temp here is somewhere between freakin HOT and OMG WE ARE GOING TO DIE hot. Coastal Georgia....
A busted egg with a dead baby doesn't really sound like the egg rotted and exploded. If the hen was distressed there may well have been a predator (rat? Snake?) Coming into the nest, or another one of your birds. Keep your other birds away from her! This morning there was a busted egg and a dead baby. I am pretty sure it was a late quiter. My poor Puds was distraught though. I removed it fast but she was shaking and whimpering. It probably exploded. That would mean I think we are down to 2 eggs. I am scared we won't have a baby. I am DESPERATELY looking for a baby duck or goose to stick under her right now. If I order two from Metzer farm, I am scared of (for one thing) shipping babies PERIOD, and two...what if she does not stay broody by time they come? Is there anyone within a days drive of Coastal Georgia that has newborn ducks or geese for sale? I will make a new post for that....
