My ducks were harassing my geese, so I separated the offending ducks out. But the darn ducks hurt my 2 yearling geese. One has a small area of her neck that's bare. The neck on the other goose is hot, swollen and bare. I've been applying an antibiotic/antifungal to it for the past few days, but it hasn't improved. I've also tried Vetericyn and plain zinc oxide ointment.

The closest vet who handles birds is over 4 hours away, otherwise I'd have taken her to the vet already.

She's acting normal, foraging and drinking.

Just keep applying the ointment. Also, you could give Baytril, smallest dose I think it´s 15mg, it´s a microantibiotic which can help with little infections, etc...
What ducks do you have? They sound a handful. Were they attacking or trying to mate them?
I once had a muscovy drake that got moved on as it kept trying to mate my young female geese, poor little things were terrified of it. I have another drake here that is so well behaved.
I hope they soon are both better.

I don't think I can get Baytril, since it needs a prescription.

I could get penicillin G, LA 200 or duramycin. I have Excede (ceftiofur) and SMZ/TMP tablets on hand.

That´s a shame that you can´t get Baytril. You have to be careful with dosing geese, as some medicines aren´t good for them.
I don´t know whether the medicines you have are safe for geese, I only use Baytril as I know it´s fine.
Could you not e-mail the vet and ask him?
Meanwhile, feed her well, and keep putting the cream on then.
How is the goose today?

The problem I have is that my regular vets aren't familiar with geese, so they can't help me. The closest vets who'll see geese are almost 4 hours away. I've emailed them, and hopefully they'll get back to me.

She's acting normal, eating, drinking and foraging. Just her neck looks awful.

I looked up on Google about penecillin G for geese, but found bnothing. However, there is some information on Duramycin, so if you Google "Duramycin for geese", you´ll find a few references. Hope this helps.

How´s your goose today? What did you decide with the antibiotics? Did the vet get back to you?

It seems like applying Tomorrow, an antibiotic for cow mastitis, to her neck helped. More so than the triple antibiotic/antifungal mix I was using.

I've been using Terramycin ointment on her injured eye, which was helping. It looks like either the 2 ducks or adult goose she's with got to her last night. There were more feathers missing from around her bad eye, and a small raw patch on her neck.

I managed to weigh Izzy, and she's about 6.8lbs. She feels a bit thin, too. Not sure what a normal weight is for a 1 year old female African goose.

I decided on LA200. It has the same active ingredient as Duramycin (oxytetracyline), and from what I've read it might not burn like Duramycin can. I found 2 different sources that suggest 50mg/kg of oxytetracyline for 3-5 days, so that's what I'm going to go with.

I also moved Izzy and her 'sister' Helen2 to another area. They're both injured, though Helen2 is in better shape than Izzy. I got them both together, and they grew up together too.

They have a fairly large house (8'x12') they're lock in at night. Then they have a rather large pasture during the day. At one time, I had 2 geese and 10 ducks in this same house with no problems, so I don't think its overcrowded. But I think I'll have to figure out a new housing arrangement (or re-home the ducks) for the winter. The area I have Izzy & Helen2 in right now is ok for now, but I'm not sure its going to work for winter.

My 4 year old African goose, Ashley, reacted quite well to them when I first introduced her to them last year.

My regular vets aren't familiar with geese, so they're not comfortable advising me on what to do. One of the bird vets I emailed refused to help me. The other was helpful, but the SMZ I thought I had is expired.

I wonder if they also might have a parasite problem too, since they've been stressed. Normally, I'd check fecal samples, since I have the equipment to do that here. But I'm not sure how to do that for a goose....or even how to deworm a goose.

For deworming I use Epernix pour on since there is no egg withdrawl and I have chickens and ducks who lay also. you use it like front line for dogs. others use a variety of other wormers. When an animal has been injured they are always subject to being picked on by other flock members , so it's always best to separate with another docile flock member and give the injured one time to heal. Then reintroduce slowly back into the flock.

I´m pleased you managed to find something that helped your goose, that´s great. Well done you. Shame about the one vet, but at least the other one was helpful.
So they´re separate now? So how did the others get to hurt her again? Why is the area you have no good for the winter? So many questions, I´m trying to understand your set-up.
So do they still get bullied in the day in the large pasture, or is it only at night that you get this problem? So, at night, then, they´re normally all in this little house together? I know you say it´s quite large, but I think that is quite a small space for them when they don´t get along. If they can´t stay in the other set-up during the winter, is there any way you can fit a separate pen inside the main night-house to divide the two while they recover? Just for the two? Maybe you could make a divider with old pallets? They´d feel a lot less stressed, and more secure.
Also, are you absolutely sure that Izzy and Helen are females? Questions, questions....
