Hi people,
I have two nine month old geese, one of them is a gander. The other one started laying eggs last week. But now she is very dirty, she stopped washing herself. Also the goats keep biting her feathers, normally she would run away or defend herself, but she stopped doing that. She doesn't seem to be sick or down in her behaviour.
Is this related to her first time laying eggs?
Here is picture is my clean gander for comparison, and my laying goose

Subdued behavior like this can be a sign of illness, with geese by the time they’re noticeably ill is when they’ve been sick a long time and they’ve reached the point of being life threateningly sick.
Geese will bathe less while they’re broody, but she would be sitting on her eggs most of the day, not roaming around letting goats nibble at her which is alarming.
If the gander is to rowdy she may be reluctant to climb in with him, but that doesn’t explain why she’s letting goats chew on her.

At this stage her symptoms are really non specific so it’s impossible to say what’s wrong so if it’s possible to get her looked at by a vet it would be a good idea, if not monitor her closely to see if anything else is off or if more symptoms appear, try to keep her comfortable and up her nutrient intake, give her oystershell and a wide variety of foods, romaine, kale, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, apples, grapes, berries, whatever you can get her to eat, maybe add apple cider vinegar with the mother to her water. If you can get corid add that to their water for the chance it’s coccidia which does go around in spring.

Update: i gave her extra nice and fresh greens and fruit, and made her her own warm bath and shower, and she is way better now :) she is starting to wash herself again and bites back like she used to. Thank you all!!
