Yesterday morming I put a gosling in the incubator after its mother got off the nest. It was peeping. Last night a hole was pipped through the egg and I could see its beak. This morning it's still peeping but no more advancement in the hole. When should I worry that it's stuck and needs help? Thanks

I don't have any expereince with goslings just chicks (tho Im currently incubating some pheasant eggs!) but Im guessing they're pretty much the same, my last eggs one of them took 26 hours from pip to hatch, do you know how many hours it's been? check the membrane if you can, if it looks brown/ yellow it could have become shrink wrapped if the humidity isn't high enough, in which case it's probably stuck. try not too disturb it if it's still pepping and the membrane doesn't look dry, as you don't want it to loose humidity :)

Geese and ducks can take up to 3 days to complete a hatch. Roughly 24 hours from internal to external pip, another 24 hours from external pip to zipping and the zipping itself could take up to 8 hours to complete. I've had a duckling go longer than 3 (nerve wrecking) days once. Wait 'till tomorrow morning, at least, or if you know what time it pipped give it 30 hours before thinking about assisting. Some of them just need a little longer to complete the process. In the meantime keep the humidity high (around 70%) so it's membrane doesn't dry out and "shrink wrap" it.

It does kind of look shrink wrapped. Humidity is 70 degrees. What so you do for the shrink wrap?

Also, thanks for all the help.

Humidity is fine, stop worrying!

Hi,
I've never successfully hatched out geese but I've done entry chicks and have helped out on a few occasions. I'd b thinking about helping out when it's coming up to about 18 hrs.

Any progress?

Thanks. The shell is away from the membrane and it looks like there is about a 1/4 inch cap as far as I can see . The membrane that was exposed and that I could see had blood veins I'm it. I'm assuming that they will eventually absorb.
It is sleeping now, but I can still see it breathing. I wonder from first peep how long it takes for all that blood and yolk to absorb!
I had over 50 eggs this year and between the January two week hot spell and them starting to lay in the dead of winter, all my eggs were frozen. This is all I have left. I sure hope it makes it. (-:

To give you an idea how long this can take: I've had a duckling that pipped in the wrong spot (bang in the middle of the egg), so I was with it from pip to hatch. It started on a Saturday (early) afternoon when I noticed the pip and cleared just enough of the shell and membrane to allow it to breathe. I waited until Monday before I continued the assist (± 48 hours after pip), but there was still visible blood vessels. So I waited until late Monday evening, cleared more of the shell, checked the membrane and there was still a little blood, this time only in the belly area. I left it overnight and it completed the hatch early Tuesday morning, by itself.

As long as it's breathing o.k. and is not showing any signs or distress leave it. Give it time. It needs right now is to breathe. You're doing great so far

Don't worry.

Thank you! Still breathing and blood vessels that were exposed are absorbed. Should I leave it be or break more parts of the egg?

Leave it and see what it does. Hopefully it will complete the hatch by itself, but it could be awhile yet. Also, the more of the shell you remove the bigger the exposed membrane that you'll have to keep damp and that is just added hassle, so leave the shell on a bit longer. How are we doing time-wise? How long since it pipped now? In hours?
