Hi All:

Mother nature has thrown us another curve ball. Our last three Embden eggs were hatched at the weekend, one did not make it, the other two, and one has definite leg issues, splayed not sure? In essence the right leg is strong, the left leg is not and the foot does not appear responsive, in the it does not fan out naturally, nor does it curl up.

I am not sure if there are nerve issues here, dislocation or what. The leg appears identical, to feel as the right, although the bone from the shoulder to elbow (tibitotarsus?) feels slightly thinner on the left.
We've tried the elastic band method, suggested in Chris Ashton Keeping geese, breeds and management, this went down like a lead balloon and appeared to cause more stress. So I've had a look on You tube and seen clips which suggest "vet tape?", which appears to have had some success with chicks, parrots and a like.

I would appreciate any guidance from the forum, we also have a local vet, whose guidance I will seek in case there is a hidden issue, which I have not identified, which I may not be able to treat.

Regards to all Paul T

Have you taken vet wrap and use it for the brace between the legs. I just put mine on their back and they lay there very good with the legs in a natural passion and you take the wrap and start on one leg wrap it around it then go over to the other leg wrap it around it and then go over the middle so the sticky part does not get stuck to the down. See if that works for baby..
Make sure they get waterfowl or game bird feed because it has the proper amount of niacin in it...

Thanks Ruru we applied this last night, admittedly we have found the little one appears to be struggling to move around now, we have found her on a her back a few times but we will keep an eye and persevere. We are also drip feeding brewer’s yeast in water to keep the fluids up and I’m contemplating diluting the feed so that we can feed via a pipit if necessary. Regards Paul T

With regret, I have to announce that the little one passed way, yesterday. We had been feeding /drinking her but it was clear that she was getting weaker. Regarding the "splayed leg" I may have miss diagnosed in that the right leg was ok but the left leg rather than going out to the side went straight-out behind and did not appear to have the muscular strength to be pulled under the body.

Thanks to everyone for their direction and support. I now have the dilemma that the other gosling no longer has a playmate other than eight chicks all that hatched at the same time. However, the Gos seems to have some very rough play techniques ie seeing how far a chicks wing will stretch is one of them!

I am enquiring in the area if anyone has a gos or duckling that would be a more suitable companion for our little lady.

Gosh I am so sorry you lost the baby gosling. Just remember you did all possible for the little one. Sometimes they look ok but there is something are things we can not see wrong with them. You were a good momma.

but I had to laugh when you said about the gosling is trying to see how far a chicks wing will stretch, I'd say a new play mate is the best option. lol
