I received my goslings yesterday and am having a couple issues. First, one has a mobility issue. His toes all curve inwards, making the surface area of his foot smaller. it didn’t seem to bother him much yesterday, but today he can’t walk at all, he tries and his legs just splay to the sides. I tried making him a splint out of vet wrap but he kept falling over unable to get up or shaking it off. They’re on large wood shavings so it isn’t a slippery surface. He seems to be getting a tad bit weaker and more tired which concerns me :hmm

Secondly, I can’t seem to get any of them to eat. They’re all alert and active and drink quite a bit but no eating. They peck at lots of stuff, even at the food a few times, but they won’t eat it. They just try to eat the bedding and then give up. When they poop it’s water or water with egg yolk. I have the food in a small bowl, I tried putting some on a paper towel next to the nutrient gel, and floating some pieces in the water, but they haven’t eaten a single crumb. It’s Mazuri waterfowl starter.

Do you guys have any advice on what to do about these issues? Thanks :)

I like to raise very young goslings on paper towels with shelf liner (for traction) for at least the first few days to help them strengthen their legs. The shavings may be a distraction, and putting them on something else may encourage them to focus on the food. I hatch my own goslings and they're typically eating very soon after they go into the brooder.

x2 on vitamin supplements. I like Poultry Nutri-Drench, and administer it to any hatchlings looking weak after hatching (and it's been very helpful for resolving wry neck cases).

Is the waterfowl starter in small crumbles?

Good news, I’ve gotten all three to eat the feed in water consistently. Thought I had some savachick but it’s gotten damp somehow so not sure if it’s safe to use :hmm going to the farm supply tomorrow

Savachick is all right, but poultry nutri-drench is a far more potent multivitamin and duravet B complex is a better source of B vitamins.

The probiotic version of savachick is a joke in my opinion, it only has one species “Bacillus Subtilis,” the more species and higher concentration of those species make a better probiotic, one species doesn’t do much. Dumor multispecies probiotic and probios horse and livestock probiotic are the best tractor supply offers.
