Got 11 for my first time

Golden comets will live about 2-4 years, and often die of reproductive issues. But they will give you one large to x-tra large egg a day. I have one and 3 ISA Browns, which are very similar.

Post a pic of your cuckoo marans on the What Gender or Breed Is This forum, and folks can help you figure it out. Read the sticky to see which angles for your pictures will be most helpful. I agree, he's looking like a cockerel, but it's hard to tell from the photo for sure. Need a straight on and side view of the comb in focus and in natural light.

Welcome to BYC! I currently have three 7-year-old Cuckoo Marans hens. They have been very healthy, but are all Very broody. And ALL their daughters and granddaughters are very broody too. My cuckoo Marans are all very docile and gentle. I never got any more after my initial purchase 7 years ago since they never laid many eggs due to their frequent broodiness. Also, to answer your question, cuckoo Marans are auto-sexing as day old chicks. Females are much darker (black) than males, with a smaller head spot. In your #8 post, the first chick is a cockerel and the second is a pullet.

I have had dozens upon dozens of red sexlinks, of which Comets are a variety. They are very special in their friendliness, intelligence and curiosity, not to mention their beautiful, big brown eggs. But mine do begin to succumb to reproductive issues beginning at about age 3, and very few make it to age 5. There isn't much that can be done to extend their lives, since their very high egg production takes a toll on their little bodies.

I love the breeds and species you have chosen, and expect you will try other breeds in the future too. But beware of chicken math. It is real, and it will getcha!😄

Thanks for the info, so here is a pic of all the birds, you can see two of the marans are light colored…
