You are spot on on your entire post, and yes barrel length is a big thing, the quietest I have shot a cb was from an old Winchester pump 22, all you could hear was the click of the firing pin, I am sure the newer knock offs of that model would produce the same results, also you are right about the this gun is better than that gun argument, I have spent time on a few firearms forums as well and that is always an endless argument. I have always found a scope preferable for night shooting as it doesn't require the sight to be lit, only the target, but for short range purposes like in a chicken coop or run that is not practical.
 
There is a big variety of "CB" loads on the market now.
They come in several bullet weights, and velocities vary from around 500 FPS up to over 900 FPS.
One even uses a 60 gr bullet in a 22 Short case, to give the same overall length as a 22 LR
