One of my hens have salpingitis. She has been acting totally normal (eating, drinking, foraging) and there is no swelling in her abdomen, but she layed a lash egg a few weeks ago and been laying soft shelled eggs ever since. Been giving her meloxicam and calcium and oregano oil.
This night she layed a very strange soft shelled egg. It was long and thin and with only a little bit of egg white but no egg yolk. So the vet prescribed antibiotics since she obviously still has infection.
The vet obviously don't have much experience with chickens, and had to use some time to figure out what antibiotics to give. I expected to get baytril, but instead she prescribed bactrim. Its 40 mg/ml + 8mg/ml mixture and she is supposed to have 5,2 ml (208 mg) two times daily. Her weight is 1,1 kg, so a small hen. I have read that Bactrim can work for ecoli, so that's OK, but from the little I can find online it seems that dosage is usually 100 mg/kg, so my chicken gets like double the dose?? Should I reduce the dose to 100 mg/kg?
