Black Hen – Clinical Case of Facial Swelling, Suspected Infectious Coryza with Possible Sinus Abscess
I’m currently treating a hen weighing approximately 1 kg. She remains active, has a good appetite, and is still laying eggs normally. The issue began with swelling on one side of her face, which has now progressed to both sides, to the point where one eye is completely closed due to the inflammation.
When gently pressing the swollen area, thick, foul-smelling mucus is released—sometimes with small yellowish lumps. There is also thick nasal discharge. However, the inside of her throat appears clean and odor-free. The mucus only drains when manually expressed.
Presumptive diagnosis: Infectious Coryza with sinus involvement or facial abscess.
Current symptoms:
Bilateral facial swelling (severe on one side)
Thick, smelly nasal discharge
One eye fully closed due to swelling
Body temperature between 40.7 °C and 41.6 °C
Hen remains active, eats and drinks well, and lays eggs
Current treatment:
Ercanol injectable: 0.5 ml IM every 24 hours
Ercanol formula: Oxytetracycline hydrochloride: 3.0 g, Gentamicin sulfate: 250 mg, Dexamethasone base: 10 mg, Diphenhydramine hydrochloride: 4 mg, Sodium metamizole (dipyrone): 5 mg, Sodium ascorbate: 120 mg, Vehicle q.s.: 100 ml.
Metronidazole oral: ¼ tablet daily (dosage adjusted for 1 kg body weight)
Daily cleaning with chamomile infusion or saline solution
Warm compresses applied several times a day to reduce swelling
Hen is kept isolated in a warm, wind-free space overnight
I'm currently considering manual drainage if the swelling softens and the condition doesn’t improve further with medication. If anyone has experience dealing with similar facial abscesses in poultry, I’d really appreciate any advice.
