I'm having trouble finding grit at the local feed stores. Is pigeon combo grit ok? My girls are only 10 weeks old. I've given some parakeet grit, but can't find anything called chicken grit or granite grit.

They do get time out to play on the side yard but it is mostly grass. They also have a dirt portion to their run, but it really does not have any rock in it.

They are still on chick starter, but do enjoy treats.

Might be a bit small. If you have a patch of dirt or gravel in your yard, you could always just take a shovelful of dirt and put it in the yard, and they'll get their own grit. That's what I do.

Hey,

We have three areas where our chickens live. Each area is 18' x 18' and the coop sits in the middle. Each area has about a dozen chickens. We do not and never have given grit to our chickens. They pick up plenty from the ground within their area. We only feed Purina Mills SunFresh Recipe Scratch Grains in the winter. Even then, we only give it in the evenings and only as much as they can eat in about a 5 minute time frame. Scratch grains should not be more than 10% of their total diet. Even in the winter when we are giving scratch grains we do not give grit because they get plenty from the ground in their area. This may not work in all areas, but it's worked for us just fine.
