I got this guy Sunday morning. He couldn't resist the snow crab scraps we had left over from a feast at my sisters house. First night the trap was set!

This is him in the back of my truck.

Here he is just prior to release (lucky bugger) a few towns away from my house.

He is very fortunate that I didn't end his thieving little life. However, there is another one in the same tree now! My neighbor told me it was watching my girls in the yard all day. If it was on my property, I would shoot it, but it is not and there are ordinances in my village about any firearm, including air guns! Can you believe that?!

Good to get rid of him, but if you have relocated hope it was very far away. You now have a trap smart coon which will very likely return home. All wild animals have a strong homing instinct.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you've just handed your problem off to another chicken owner. Now this raccoon will be smart enough to not go in the trap. Catch and release sound all well and good... But not from my stand point. Not when you lose nearly a whole flock to one raccoon. Not when you can't trap the raccoon cuz it is smart enough to avoid traps. Please think about that when you catch the next one.

I totally agree i am one of them folks that live way out in the country, you can't see my place from the main road cause it is 2/3 rds of a mile back in the woods, were you to drop the coon near my place my dogs would find and kill it once it entered their territory but my farming neighbors may not be so lucky and could sustain loses from a drop like this, plus these territories are already taken and strangers are not welcome without a fight causing all involve to suffer or worse die.

I know you mean well but these are some things to think about, find a trapper in your area to come get it if you can not dispach it yourself.
There is a website called Trapperman, com their are tons of folks that could help you out, just join up and ask.

I know it was mentioned that shooting isn't allowed where you live, so here's a second lethal option to properly dispose of your problem. Fill a barrel taller than the trap with water. Drop the trap/raccoon in and walk away for 5 minutes (in actuality, it should take less than 5 minutes). Afterwards dispose of the carcase (garbage preferred, but burying/composting/etc are also options).

A shot would be most human, but the barrel is still a lot quicker and more human than a variety of ways it could have died in the wild. Most importantly in either case, at least you wouldn't be dumping the problem on others.

Good call to all of your replies. I do wish I would have killed it, as I normally would have and have in the past. I did drop it in a park, but I do realize they can and will wander from the drop off point. I will not make this mistake again if I catch another one.

The neighbor that let me borrow the trap and own the tree that they are living in, is an animal lover and doesn't want them killed, even though I have informed them that they are a threat to their old, feeble toy poodles. I can use the story, "I took him out to the country where it can live a long, free life." But in reality cap it's butt with a .22 and call it a day. Believe me, I did not want this sucker to live. I am a hunter and would have loved to end this critters life. Thanks again folks, your points are well taken.

Get your own trap and then you will not feel the need to honor your neighbors wishes. My kids prefer I release all animals, but only a rare few ever make it out of my trap. I no longer make the mistake of showing them what I catch.

You're ALL kind of nasty. I also think dumping in country is irresponsible BUT the suggestions of drowning are a selfish/lazy/cruel in MY world. I also hunt, process my own fowl BUT the coons don't deserve such anger. They
are Gods critters and need to be controlled, true, but not inhumanely. And trappers drown for pelts and I have no problem with pelts but once AGAIN don't think drowning is a kind suggestion. Money or not-grow some compassion.
