Me and my mom went outside on Saturday morning to open the coop and turn on their daytime light. Let me say it was 20 degrees outside. My 6 yr. old brother wanted to tag along. He dislikes the chickens. He stays outside and waits till I come outside, even if it is snowing or raining. I dont know why he doesnt come inside. My mom and I put a saddle on a hen, collected three eggs, and set the bucket outside. Then we went back in and gave them oyster shell. My brother closed the door and some how locked it. All me and my mom had were two pairs or keys and a big knive that I always carry. We started to get out the door and figured out we were locked in. We were all in our pajamas and it was twenty degrees! We sat there thinking of a way to get out. My dad was inide with my brother and the coop was too far for them to hear us. I started to cut off a piece of trim that keeps out the drafts. I cut all through it and broke the tip off my knive. We got out and found my dad and my brother eating breakfast and waiting for us to come inside. they werent even going to come look for us!

Well the lock we have on the coop is a sliding barrel lock.

Has anyone elso had to fix their locks? Do you have any pics?

Thanks!

Cody!!

Our toes were getting a little numb. lol My dad said he thought we were just playing with the chickens like we always do. I said "Dad it's 20 #*$&*#@* degrees outside. lol He was like ohh ok Im sorry.

I almost got locked in my small duck coop the other day. THat would have been awful! I did not even have my cell phone.

i betcha it wasnt an accident ur brother locked u in there LOL!

Although this may seem funny...you are right in that a person could be seriously injured like this. The only thing you could do if it looked like no one would be coming to rescue you is to kick out the side of one of the walls...or something like that. My daughter locks me inside one of the coops all the time...thank goodness we're in Florida and the walls are wire...not solid!!

Wow - glad you're ok! When we built or coops, we recycled old doors, and DBF mounted the knob/lock so it locks from the inside (because that is something I so would do too!) Then he hung the keys from the top of the inside of the door.
