Got lots of questions!

I have 7 Golden Buff Opingtons, 13 Rhode Island Reds, and 3 Barred Rocks. The Buffs and the Rocks i got in 2011, and the Reds I got in 2012. The Buffs are the same age, so why would some of the Buffs lay a larger egg than the Others?

Welcome to BYC. Depending upon the genetic make up of the bird, there can be wide variation in the egg size within a breed. This is generally more so with hatchery birds rather than breeder birds.

Glad you joined us!

On the egg size - ditto what Sourland said. Enjoy those big eggs; at the moment, most of the birds I have that are laying are Bantams!

Hi and

. You'll find there are loads of wonderful people here who can probably answer most if not all of your questions.

I have a Buff Orpington that finally started laying and lays X-Large dark brown eggs...not like Marans dark, but dark...

I also noticed that higher protein gives me much larger eggs..the medium went to large, and the large became X-large, and the X-large became Jumbo when all the chickens started eating the chick starter that I was putting up there for a few younger birds...so now when I run out of laying pellets I will be switching everyone to a grower or maintenance feed with oyster shell on the side. I mean the difference in the eggs, and the chickens is remarkable to say the least. I guess that is the difference between 16% and 20% protein.
