I told DH that for Christmas I wanted an automatic door opener for my chickens. I showed him posts from other BYCers who'd done the same thing (he laughed at one that closed like a guillotine

and promised me none of my chickens would lose their heads). He got a drapery motor last week, and installed everything today!!! It's plugged into a timer. It closed this evening at 6:00 and is supposed to open at 7:30 tomorrow, so hopefully it'll go as scheduled... I'm very excited

Not that you can tell much from the pic, but here it is...

I have one and you are going to LOVE it!! Mine opens/closes with the light sensor. I love the idea that I can stay in bed while the girls are let out at daybreak. One of man's greatest inventions! Enjoy

Seconed, there are no dumb Questions here, because all of us has to start at some point.

Chickens in General will go to the coop to sleep every day when the daylight goes, especially when you train them that the coop is thier home, and teaching them this Idea is real simple, I did it so many times( only lock the new birds in tier coop for 4 to 5 days at the beginning and they will learn that.

Glad you came on board with us.

I turn their coop light on before it gets dark each evening, and my girls have always gone in by nightfall (attracted to the safety of the light I guess). My door is set to close about 30 minutes after nightfall. So far mine is working GREAT! I always go out to check on my girls and turn the light out each evening anyhow, so if by chance something happened, it'd be okay.
Now, some people have written posts about having problems getting their chickens to go in their coops at night. So I wouldn't think an auto. door would work for them...???

thank you for the reply,

i realy look forard to making a good chicken coop with a auto-matic door that i can move around my yard witch is very large

(p.s. im a electrician so wireing will not be a problem ((heat, light and ect.) ..i think what i should do, is make a over-ride switch just incase some get stuck out side.
i allso like the idea of a light comeing on befor dark, so that there are trained to come in when it gets dark.(need to start reading abought chicken behavor too!!!)

im going to do my own post when i start my coop for abought 6 hens. so you might see me just asking random questions befor then.. hope to start building around the end of january..
