My daughter and i were so excited today as we got our first two eggs today. We purchased our first two ducks in March which are Khaki ducks and then one Perkin a couple weeks later. Our Khaki ducks are both males but we were unsure when it came to our Perkin duck so today she confirmed she was a female and we couldnt be happier. My question is.....at this point we do not plan on hatching any but looking more towards eating our duck eggs. Im a little nervous because im not well educated yet on good eggs verses bad eggs or fertilized eggs. I did stick a flash light up to shell and the eggs appear to not be fertilized but can anyone give me any tips on this?

Hi and welcome to BYC - great that you have joined us. Congrats on your first eggs! Even fertile eggs are perfectly safe to eat, providing you remove the eggs before the momma begins to sit on them to incubate. Embryonic development only begins once the sitting begins. A fertile egg can sit on your counter top indefinitely and it will be just the same as a non-fertile egg.

Since they are you own eggs, I would not imagine you'll ever get a bad one. There's no mistaking the smell of a rotten egg, so don't worry - if it ever happens, your gag-reflex will let you know

Here's a link to the duck forum - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks - they are a friendly bunch, so feel free to go and introduce yourself there.

Best wishes
