Got my new 1588 in the mail, should i test it?

I have also heard this and learned it from experience. That is why I made the suggestion of using the older eggs as a test group. I guess you could at least get the bator up and running with out any eggs to check temp and humidty levels before doing anything else. See how stable the bator is with out any eggs before doing anything else.

this is what i was thinking

I have yet to hear of anyone have issues with a 1588 keeping temp. As long as the initial instructions are followed to make sure that the preset is the right set, then no further fiddling is needed. It's even rare that the preset is off. As someone else said, this is the entire reason that you've spent the money for the 1588, because it's the best small incubator out there! It's reliable and it's fool-proof.

i'm with wildsky,

Even if "test" eggs do hatch, it doesn't really mean any others will - the hatchability depends on other things as well, just crank up the bator and see how well it keeps the temp and humidity etc. that should be plenty!

w/ eggs that old and having been through temperature extremes i'd keep a sharp nose out for rotting eggs.

i know the feeling you are having. soon is never soon enough when i comes to incubating!

If you want to test it with eggs inside, either find someone near you who only keeps hens (like many of us do) and try those out for a week or so, or, GASP, I can't believe I'm saying it, go to the gas station and by the cheapest white eggs you can find. You know they came from hens raised in cramped battery cages, and have NO chance at being fertile.

Congrats on the incubator! I'm shopping around for my first one right now.

thank you, after much thought i think im just going to put a little warm water in it and let it run for 48 hrs. Will probably put my turner in as well. Think i should turn my turner on since the motor gives off a little bit of heat to see what the bator reads in a while?
