OK, so . . . the Genesis and turner arrived today. Of course I had to set it up to see if it works correctly and holds a good temperature, right? Now it is just sitting there staring at me - empty and accusing . . . .

My younger chicks are 12 weeks, so the cockerels aren't sexually mature yet, and even if they were, their brood-mate-pullets aren't. Of course, there are those older girls (29 weeks and laying), but I think my poor roos would poop themselves if one of those girls squatted in front of them.

Maybe some hatching eggs? Just to see if the incubator works, and to have a practice run for when it counts, right? Yeah, that's it (the wife's gonna kill me).

I know it probably doesn't matter, but is there a consensus out there for what breed may have less hatching problems? Is there a correlation at all? I have been thinking about some Lavender Orps or Cream Legbars.

She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed just doesn't understand Chicken Math . . . .

How I rationalize it to he-who-must-be-obeyed (my husband):

I have to test this out to make sure it works. We don't want to be wasting eggs our eggs while I work on getting the knack of this thing!

Of course, I've got a LG still air incubator and from what I understand it's notorious for being fickle, so this argument works. Still, you do need to do a test run so you can work out any kinks and/or return the incubator if it's faulty!

Edited to add: I have no idea about what breeds to try. Sorry. Though I will be watching to see for myself.
