Grammarians UNITE!

Oooo, another one that drives me insane is the plural of deer and elk. Both words are singular and plural with the same spelling. There is no such thing as deers and elks.

HA_HA_HA! In my home town we have a club called "The Elks" I'm sure that doesn't help with the confusion!

Yep! We have that too, but isn't that because it is posessive? Which of course means it should more properly be called "The Elk's Club" I do think that certain things are just understood. I don't think that everything has to be PERFECT. I think what bothers me the most is the fact that no one even tries. [edit] to change 'NO one' to so few... or not enough?

I honestly don't notice every little thing, and I can easily 'convert' mistyped things, (letters out of order or things that are obviously from fingers flying too fast). It's the really, really sloppy things that bother me. Of course, I was raised in a family where English was NOT the first language of my grandparents or my parents, so a very high value was placed on learning how to speak and write properly!!! The same circumstances mean that I can see, hear and understand when people make mistakes, and not overreact most of the time, because not everyone can help it!

I can't really say whether I enjoyed this thread or not. I saw a lot and I am trying to keep my mouth shut about (to me) obvious errors. Enough said about that.

One thing; octopuses is an acceptable spelling for the plural of octopus. The root word (is that the proper term) for octopus is a Greek word not a Latin word. I had always thought that octopi was the correct plural form until I saw it discussed in a book I read a few years ago.

My Google spell check accepted octopuses but it did not accept octopi.

In truth, it's a lot easier to understand the people on BYC than it is 99.9% of the population on "the outside."
