Yes, that is my chosen name here, and it is true! My daughter and son-in-law surprised me on Mother's Day with a coop and 4 chicks - 2 white silkies and 2 silkie / D'uccle crosses. My daughter is the person who told me about this website. I've been lurking / reading for awhile, and decided to join today. Because I'm keeping these 'in secret' my daughter swapped one of the D'uccles because it was obviously a rooster. She thinks the silkies are both hens, but I guess I'll find out in another month or so when they either start laying eggs or crowing! I'll try to figure out how to post pictures so I can introduce you to Peggy, Patty (the two silkies), Penny and Paula.

I'm a bit nervous as a first time chicken 'Mom', and want to make sure I do as much as I can to keep them (and my family) healthy. My husband is doing lots of things to make the chickens safe and comfortable. We changed all of the chicken wire for 1/4" hardware cloth, and added a 'screen door' inside the coop door to allow for more airflow, especially on hot days/nights. We've had a long, hot (for us!) summer here, with heat warnings for a month and high humidity, but not much rain (we are in Zone 5). I've used a fan and put ice inside the waterer, added shade cloth and even put up a 'play pen' under our apple trees to give them more shade. Found out quickly that I needed a cover on the play pen or the D'uccles would hop out! Trimmed flight feathers on them, just to reduce chances of them getting out.

Besides enjoying the antics and sounds the chickens make, I also have a small garden, and like sewing, camping and hiking (easy trails...)
TTYL!
