Greetings everyone! I am a Kansan, new to BYC, and to being an owner of chickens. I have always wanted them, since I was little. My Grandma kept chickens, ducks and guineas. I remember her keeping the chicks in a box in her old oven to keep warm. It's always been my dream to have my own. I told any potential mates that I was dating that I desired them once I bought a house, and anyone that didn't had better get on down the road!

I bought 11 acres with a berm house and a big ol 1930's barn. The coop is about 16 X 40 with a run on the south and east side that is 18 x 60. It houses 2 BR's, 1 Cochin hen, 1 RIR roo and 8 RIR hens. I used to let them freerange, but lost two due to a hawk or fox. I plan on letting them free range again when I can get more fence put up. It's amazing how many stray dogs and cats are out and about in the countryside! I would like to get more chicks and some guineas eventually.

I appreciate the wit and wisdom on the BYC website and look forward to the sage advice. Also hope to get one of those snazzy sweatshirts for the winter!

Peace

from another Kansas person. I can't wait until I can get on a farm.

Greetings, I'm in Missouri. It was my Grandma's chickens that inspired me also. (or maybe those chicken dinners)

Thank you everyone! I do believe it WAS those scrumptious chicken dinners that had me hooked. That and how strangely soothing they can be to watch strut about the yard. Hey shellie69, you will get there. It took me 10 years to save enough for a downpayment, but it can happen.
