my grandpa died a little over a year ago and my grandma is kinda lonely and i was thinking the next time i got up there ill build her a small coop and buy her some chickens.

but would the chickens survive a 9 hour drive? idk where to get chickens in Florida (except key west but they are crazy!) and i want to get her a calm lap bird. she has 2 parakeets that she talks to all the time according to my cousins but she never really had a dog or a cat in the house ever idk if she would like a chicken....

Hey, Great idea, I had thought of doing that for my mom, but, just make sure it is something that she wants to take on. My mom would love it but didn't feel as if she would be able to care for them like they need to be. She has had surgery on both eyes and has had a mild stroke, I don't know your grandmother's age or health so you may want to consider those things before going ahead with your plans. What a thoughtful grandson you are hope things work out. Let us know what you decide.

she is in great physical health and cares for anything she is very kind but i think she has some mental problems..... idk
she is a "holy roller" and she is a great woman but is very controlling.
very kind she is like Marie on everybody loves Raymond she puts out kind insults lol.

i love her!!

Trey.....I would talk to her about it first. If she is interested, and sounds to me like she will be, Just make sure you build the coop up off the ground so it is easier for her to reach in there to clean. Assuming you are going to build something say 4 x 4...for only 4 hens. This way when she goes to get eggs, she can just open a door from the outside, and reach in. No stooping over. Also make access door for her to clean...at a comfortable level. Sounds like a great plan, if she is willing. Just remember, you might have to help her out so often.

Wish I could help you on where to get chickens, since I noticed no one was able to answer. I wonder where in Florida she lives?

There isn't much available here anymore (NW FL) but maybe you could start checking craigslist.org for somewhere near her?

Any chance she might like to raise chicks? That would give her a better chance of a calm lap bird, wouldn't it, if she babies them as she raises them? I have several that jump up and WANT to be held and petted for as long as I'm willing to hold them (mine are 4 weeks now).

And if they can be shipped by the post office as day-olds, they should survive a 9 hour drive? I know day-olds are absorbing the yok sak but ... as long as you feed them well beforehand and maybe stop to water, won't they be ok? You're driving them?

Anyway, I think it's a sweet idea.
