I offer a hopper of grit and a hopper of oyster shell at all times.
These 2 items are about the cheepest things you can purchase for your chickens. I buy them in 50# bags and each lasts me about 2 years. I use the feeder pictured below, inside the coop to keep the oyster shell dry.

I have 11 ladies. All laying. 2 are 7mos, 6 are 1yr and 3 came from the auction so no idea how old (they replaced boys).

What do you set it out in? I currently have both my grits and oyster shell in pans but they seem to just scratch it out and seem to waste a lot

This is a coffee up holder screwed to wall of pen, it holds a small dog food dish. When I set it on floor it was always filled with wood shaving or they would tip it over. A tuna can nailed would work. It’s up high enough that it stays clean.

I use 40 ounce pails. One for Oyster Shells and another for Poultry Grit. They are held on with eye screws. Easy on easy off. I drilled several 3/32 holes in the bottom to drain moisture. . I removed the handle. GC
