After you're finished with the GSE treatment make sure you give them avian specific probiotics to re-introduce the good gut bacteria.

I ferment wheat and water from it is a probiotic (Acidophilus). 1 cup of wheat and 3 cups of water, 24 hours summertime or 48 at winter. it consists of B12 vitamin as well. I make it every day. if you use it for people make sure you wash wheat well.

Yes, it is safe, when dosed correctly...

Here's some info for ya...
https://web.archive.org/web/2017011...grepo.php?verze=en&id=vyuziti&link=4_10&sub=4

It states dosage per weight:
For 0.5 kilograms of body weight 0.01 ml = 0.2 drops
For 1 kilogram of body weight 0.02 ml = 0.3 drops
For 2.5 kilograms of body weight 0.05 ml = 0.7 drops

And another site...
http://www.nutriteam.com/pets/

That's a good start to an organic/ biodynamic regimen, compliments their immune system and should help keep bacteria and infections from cropping up...

Do you mind me asking, how you came across this information and how you are incorporating it?

I'm organic, Biodynamics is a huge benefit to me... I'm curious. I ask lots of questions...Lol you've been warned :D
Would the Grapefruit Seed extract tablets work the same as the liquid extract?

According to what I found, yes... Dilution would be different because its a powder, but I found this:
A typical capsule of GSE may have a concentration of 100mg or 125mg. This would mean that one capsule is equal approximately to ten drops of the 50/50 liquid concentrate. This is a good “rule of thumb” to follow when converting the dosage between liquid and capsule/tablet.

That was a "human" site though...

I ran into something that concerns me though, in looking at studies, they've found most samples to have high concentrations of benzethonium chloride from manufacturing...

So if it were me, I would err on the side of caution; make sure to read the label and shoot for OMRI or organic, because these chemicals are touted as "natural" but added during processing, not part of the GSE itself. Steer clear of those added "natural" "synthetics" and you should be OK ;)

Hmmm yeah thats a bit scary! Thank you for sharing that with me! I like the idea of all the good the GSE is used for but when intra that I'm a but unsure about the tablets!

Me too... I'm waffling on the fence lol... Since it went the direction of the fowl pox issue, its actually helping me research it better, because I have it in my flock too...MINOR, they usually build resistance, but I got new chicks from outside the farm (yes, Mary @Folly's place lol I had to think long and hard about adding fresh blood, this is why.. Gotcha there ;) )

So now I have need for vaccinating the new stock, or letting it ride and culling by natural selection... Argh. :p

Anyway, adding GSE to my list if possibilities sure helps, even if I can't find a clean source, at least I got the info and science behind it to help...

I'm a label reading junkie lol.... I PORE over labels, unfortunately I confuse myself with it, so I'm still researching the GSE...

Neat topic, I learned something new today! :)

How do you cull a chick? I have one that hatched with curled toes and spraddle leg and I bandaged her legs together and the whole 9 yards. She will never walk and I dont want her to die in pain or suffer like my Turkey did:'(

Oh boy...a chick :( honestly, I go get the DH; he takes care of things like that for me.... I had to ask him, if course...he would "hit it quick with a shovel".... Oh that's sounds bad, but that's why I can't do it :(... I have had to set something in front of a cat and walk away before, .... It's a tough call, you could always take it to a vet, they may have pity and do it real cheap or maybe even free....

I gave GSE to my pullets and my NN is sneezing less loud!

it might have been some fungus issue. I will give it to my recovering (fowl pox) flock as well.

any idea for how many days I should give it?

The Dr. Well links in this older post are broken and mis- directing to an adult site in China. :-(

Dr. Andrew Well is very knowledgeable expert in naturally sourced medicinals and has been researching for many decades presently.

His comments:
Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) comes from the seed, pulp and white membranes of grapefruit. It has a reputation as an antifungal and antibacterial agent, but when I discussed your question with Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in the fields of integrative medicine, dietary supplements and women’s health, and an authority on botanical medicine, she said that it is unclear how potent GSE is as an antibacterial or antifungal. She said that many grapefruit seed extracts on the market are adulterated and noted that a German study of six commercial grapefruit seed extracts showed that five of these products contained benzethonium chloride, a synthetic antimicrobial often used in cosmetics and other topical preparations, as well as the preservatives triclosan and methylparaben.

Dr. Low Dog adds that this finding is consistent with those of other researchers who have found benzethonium chloride or triclosan in samples of liquid and powdered grapefruit seed extracts. When grapefruit seed extract is used topically (say, for treatment of athlete’s foot as I have recommended), the presence of these synthetic substances is not a big issue. But she cautions that grapefruit seed extract often is recommended for treatment of infant thrush (also a fungal infection) and says she would not recommended putting a potentially adulterated product in an infant’s mouth or that anyone use it internally.

It is probably safe to put a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in water in a spray bottle for an odorless way to kill household mold and mildew. As a treatment for athlete’s foot, you can try applying full strength grapefruit seed extract to the affected area two to three times a day. You can also use it as an alternative to tea tree oil to treat nail fungus. Paint it on affected nails twice a day for at least two months. But given the evidence of apparent widespread adulteration of grapefruit seed extract, I agree that it shouldn’t be taken internally.
